The Parish Council would like to make residents aware that a pair of swans have established a nest at the ford.
At this time of year, swans—particularly the male—can be highly protective and may behave aggressively if people or dogs approach too closely. We therefore ask everyone to take extra care when using this area.
Legal Protection
Swans, including the Mute Swan, are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Under this legislation, it is an offence to:
- Intentionally kill, injure, or take a swan
- Take, damage, or destroy an active nest
- Take or destroy eggs
- Disturb birds while they are nesting in a way that could cause harm
This legal protection is in place to ensure that wildlife can breed safely and without unnecessary interference.
Advice for Residents
To help keep both people and wildlife safe, we kindly ask that residents:
- Keep a safe distance from the nesting area
- Keep dogs on leads when nearby
- Do not approach, feed, or attempt to interact with the swans
- Supervise children closely in the vicinity
These simple steps will help avoid confrontation and allow the swans to nest successfully.

The Parish Council is monitoring the situation and will be installing temporary protective fencing to help maintain a safe distance around the nest.
